Description

I. A New Halakic Interpretation In 1 Cor 7:12-13 Paul rules that no believer married to an unbeliever should initiate divorce. The next verse provides justification for the ruling in two parts: first Paul sets forth the principle that grounds the ruling, YONDER MOYNIHAN GILLIHAN [TEXT NOT REPRODUCIBLE IN ASCII], "for the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the brother."1 In v. 14b this grounding principle is substantiated by the proof, [TEXT NOT REPRODUCIBLE IN ASCII], "otherwise your children would be impure, but as it is they are holy." (2) The modern interpreter must answer a number of questions: What does Paul mean when he claims that an unbelieving spouse ([TEXT NOT REPRODUCIBLE IN ASCII]) is sanctified ([TEXT NOT REPRODUCIBLE IN ASCII]) by the believing spouse? What relationship between impurity and holiness does the children's status presuppose? Why would the Corinthians have accepted Paul's identification of their children as holy? How is the impurity or holiness of the children related to the sanctification of the spouse? How does the holiness of the children prove that the unbelieving spouse is made holy by the believing spouse? Unfortunately no "handbook of ancient Corinthian sexuality and social status" is extant, nor do we have access to the instruction contained in Paul's earlier letter mentioned in 5:9,3 or to the letter to Paul in which the Corinthians asked about sexual conduct and marriage (7:1). (4) To what, therefore, may we turn for illumination on the logic underlying the ruling?
